Clearwater Public Library History From Sept. 12, 1973

  • On Sept. 12, 1973, the very first meeting of the appointed Library Board happened. 
  • On Sept. 18, 1973, a  special meeting with Mayor, Dean Mather, and the Town Board was called, for setting a budget for the library of $1500.00 for the first year to be used for books, wages, and janitor.
  • On Sept. 26, 1973, the board discussed involving the school and community in advertising for book donations. The Norfolk library provided a loan service to the library of 50 books for one month. To comply with state law, library board members are to serve 4 yr. terms with election or appointment on even years. Accordingly, Arlene Switzer and Marlene Middleton will serve until the election in 1974, and Alice B, Janet Snodgrass, and Frances Wrenholt will serve until the election in 1976. 

History from Oct. 31, 1973- Sept. 14th, 1974

  • On Oct. 31, 1973, advertising for a librarian began. The library would be open 8 hours a week, Sat. from 10-12 and 1-3. Plus 1 weekday afternoon for 2 hours and Wed. evenings from 7-9. 
  • On Nov. 1973, 1152 books were donated and cataloged.
  • On Nov. 1973, 1152 books were donated and catalogued.an. The budget for 1974 was; salary - $600.00 , books - $300.00, supplies - $100.00, miscellaneous - $338.33, social security - $35.10, total budget - $1473.43.
  • July 13, 1974, the library was officially open for regular hours. 
  • A board meeting was called on July 30, 1974. It was stated that 117 books had been check out and 102 people had visited the library. 37 library cards had also been issued. 
  • On Saturday, Sept. 14th, 1974, the library had an open house to show the community the library. 
  • On May 1874 the following memorials and their prices were discussed: $10.00 Min Claussen, $5.00 Don Hemenway, $5.00 Don Hemenway, $5.00 Lyle Switzer
  • Sept. 1974, the following budget was officially discussed for 1974-1975;

THANK YOU TO DOREEN RICE FOR MEMORIAL

-In August of 1975 a memorial of $3.00 for Art Froding was donated by daughter Vivian Hemenway

-A new local budget of $2000.00 was given, and a new state budget of $255.000 was given in November of 1975

-In January of 1976 a memorial thank you was given to Mrs. A.C.Glass and Mrs. Zrust

-A memorial thank you was given to Joe Kester in March of 1976

-A memorial thank you was given to Mrs. Wilda Hemenway in April of 1976

-In May of 1976 the Antelope County Librarians Association was organized

-A memorial for Ocea Kircher's (mother?) was donated in June of 1976

-It was decided that member terms will begin in July to coincide with fiscal year

-A memorial for Bob Eppenbaugh was given in April of 1977

-In May of 1977 shelving was purchased with a portion of Bob Eppenbaugh's memorial money

-In June of 1978 a Memoria for Reid Mummert was given by the Minerich Family

-In July of 1978 Arlene Switzer and Elsie Jones were reappointed to the board

-A memorial for Opal Finely was given by the Ashcroft Family in July of 1978

-The County Board gave the library $875.00 in November of 1978

-In July of 1979 a yearly report was given:

  • In May of 1982, a Memorial for Mrs. Faie Hixon, of $10, was given
  • A memorial thank you was sent to parties giving memorial money and also to the Sanne and Rittscher families, in September of 1982. In October of 1982, Arlene Switzer and Laura Maulding were reappointed
  • A memorial for Lloyd Hixon for Dean Mather was given for $10, in February of 1983
  • June 1983, Frances Wrenholt resigns and Helen Smith is appointed as treasurer
  • Also in June of 1983, a memorial for Lizzie Kasten was given by Dean Mather
  • A memorial for Robert Holzelaw was given in September of 1983, and a memorial for Holzelaw was given from Wilmer Maulding in November of 1983

  • The 10th anniversary of the Clearwater Public Library was celebrated with an open house in July of 1984
  • Also in July of 1984, Hilda Jones asked to be released as a librarian and assistant librarian Donna Anderson will assume the duty of the head librarian
  • A memorial for Duane Reinke was created in November of 1984
  • Memorials for Herman Radebaugh, Shirley Nolze, and Jake Jones were given to the library in 1985.
  • Joan Hoffman Resigned from the board in June 1985, and Hilda Jones was appointed to the board
  • The 1985 librarian's report was given

  • Cindy Wolfe was named librarian in April of 1987 when Donna left
  • More memorials were created for Elmer Anderson, Lowell Herley, Patrick Makelin, WM. Allemang, Bonnie Maulding, and Martha Lang were all created in 1988. 
  • Laura Maulding announced her resignation from the board in 1989, and Kelly Husek was appointed.
  • A memorial was created for Warren Wilcox in 1990.
  • Jennie Schrage was reappointed to the board in 1991 but resigned two months later. 
  • Memorials for Avalt Sanne, Don Herley, Clarence Nolze, and Bob Allen were all created in June of 1991
